Exeter’s live music thrives with punk, funk, rock, storytelling and dance

Exeter’s live music scene shows no signs of slowing as we move into late September. This week, the city’s venues deliver everything from raw post-punk and political punk-metal to funk grooves and legendary rock. Maybe you’re into some intimate storytelling, some high-energy riffs, or just a night of dancing, the South West’s grassroots calendar is stacked.

Here’s our pick of what’s on in Exeter this week.

Brooke Sharkey @ Exeter Phoenix

Tuesday 23rd September

A striking mix of folk, jazz and pop, along with a unique vocal delivery, Brooke Sharkey creates music that’s as vulnerable as it is powerful. Recognised by The Guardian as one of the world’s top 50 independent artists, her songs explore themes of love, hope, nature and loss with lyrical honesty. Having relocated to Oslo, she’s now back recording and sharing her latest material with audiences across Europe. An evening for fans of emotive songwriting and genre-bending soundscapes.

Broken Jaw + Vivaria + Tendrils + Atlas Theory + Zion @ Exeter Cavern

Thursday 25th September

If chaos and catharsis are your thing, get yourself down to the Cavern this Thursday. Broken Jaw will be bringing their punk and extreme metal energy, viscerally live and politically charged. The same energy that has earned them a reputation as one of the UK’s most unpredictable bands. Main support Vivaria crank up the brutality with beatdown and deathcore, joined by Tendrils, Atlas Theory and Zion for a stacked bill that promises no compromise noise.

Billy Nomates @ Exeter Phoenix

Thursday 25th September

Tor Maries, aka Billy Nomates, has become one of the most vital DIY voices in UK music. Fusing post-punk grit with gritty lyricism and electronic textures, her songs tackle resilience, mental health and identity with wit and honesty. Fresh from a Glastonbury set and following the acclaim of 2023’s CACTI, Billy Nomates returns to the stage with the same fearless spirit that’s made her a true inspiration on the indie circuit. A must-see performance for fans of authenticity and edge.

Juxter @ 12 Bar

Friday 26th September

South West trio Juxter deliver a jazz-funk-fusion workout that’s all about blistering keyboard solos and dynamic riffs. Drawing from legends like Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius and Frank Zappa, their live shows are a playground of improvisation and rhythm. Expect intricate musicianship that still keeps the room moving. One for fans of BadBadNotGood and adventurous jazz fusion.

When Rivers Meet @ Exeter Phoenix

Friday 26th September

When Rivers Meet bring their hurricane-strength live energy to Exeter Phoenix. Fresh off a Top 10 UK Album and three consecutive ‘Band of the Year’ wins, Grace & Aaron Bond have built a reputation for electrifying sell-out shows across continents. Independent, authentic, and unstoppable — catch them live in Exeter before they disappear back into the studio for their next album.

Lazlo and The Mad Men @ The Old Firehouse

Friday 26th September

Get ready for funk, disco and soul at one of Exeter’s most loved grassroots spaces. Lazlo and The Mad Men bring classic grooves and bass-heavy energy to the Firehouse, promising a Friday night of pure rhythm. We’re talking soulful vocals, plenty of basslines and a whole barrel load of dancefloor nostalgia, it’s the perfect gig for anyone who wants to get moving this weekend.

Marco Mendoza @ Exeter Cavern

Saturday 27th September

This is a big deal. A true rock legend steps onto the Cavern stage. Marco Mendoza has played with Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, The Dead Daisies and more. He now brings his solo show to Exeter. Backed by Drew Lowe on guitar and Chris Allan on drums, Mendoza delivers a set that’s equal parts personal storytelling and stadium-worthy performance. Expect world-class musicianship and the kind of interactive, infectious-energy show only a veteran of his calibre can deliver.
