Inside The Source: Exeter’s Community Music Space
If you are searching for a recording studio in Exeter that combines professional sound with a genuine community ethos, The Source Studios is designed for you. Run by Music in Devon Initiative CIC (MIDI), this Exeter recording studio offers high-quality equipment, affordable rates and real industry support to help local artists develop their music from first demo to full release.
Based in Concorde House on South Street, The Source puts a modern, accessible recording studio right in the heart of Exeter city centre.
A community-led recording studio in Exeter.
Music in Devon Initiative is a social enterprise founded by professional guitarist Nick Hall to create opportunities and foster a welcoming community for musicians across the county. Over the last decade, MIDI has supported more than 500 artists, with some performing at Glastonbury and gaining airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music – reinforcing the supportive environment at The Source Studios.
Both spaces are run as affordably as possible, helping emerging artists, young people, and community groups feel appreciated and encouraged to pursue their music without financial worries. The focus is on nurturing talent, building confidence, and connecting musicians to real-world opportunities across Devon.
Professional recording, mixing and mastering.
The Source Studios offers a full suite of recording, mixing and mastering services from its Exeter base. The studio features a large, sound-treated live room, a comfortable control room, quality microphones, a rack of 20 preamps and a range of outboard and digital tools to capture every detail of your performance. Whether you are recording a single, a full album, a podcast or live sessions, this recording studio in Exeter is set up to deliver release-ready results while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and creative.
Because Music in Devon Initiative runs The Source, you benefit from engineers and producers who understand both the technical side of recording and the realities of today’s music industry. For artists specifically looking for a “recording studio Exeter” that combines professional standards with a supportive, community-first feel, The Source Studios ticks every box.
Exeter rehearsal room and creative hub.
In addition to recording, The Source Studios doubles as a flexible Exeter rehearsal room. The sound-treated spaces can be booked by bands, vocal groups, tutors and youth projects for regular rehearsals or one-off sessions, providing a central, reliable place to write and develop new material. With backline, PA and other studio gear available to hire, you can arrive, plug in and focus on your music.
This makes The Source much more than a typical recording studio in Exeter – it is a creative hub that connects musicians, educators and community groups. By bringing these networks together under one roof, MIDI helps local artists share skills, collaborate and discover new performance and development opportunities.
Supporting community music in Devon.
At the heart of The Source is MIDI’s belief that music is a universal language open to everyone. Through programmes like SoundTribe, the organisation works with young people outside mainstream education and those with SEND, offering one-to-one and group sessions that support wellbeing, creativity and social skills. The new Exeter venues extend this work, using the recording studio and rehearsal spaces to provide young people, adults in recovery, and musicians from diverse backgrounds with a safe, inspiring place to explore music.
MIDI supports artists beyond the studio with a structured Music Release Plan that guides how to release music, protect rights, and access festivals and media. Strong links to Devon’s festivals and venues, including Exeter Street Arts Festival, help artists see a clear path from recording to national exposure.

Darren Branch’s first love was Heavy Metal, sparked by seeing Iron Maiden live at the Cornwall Coliseum in 1984 at the age of 13. His passion for grassroots music grew after discovering the vibrant local scene around Daylight Recording Studios in Honiton during the late 1980s. Having lived in Honiton and Exeter, Darren now lives in South Somerset and enjoys spending time in South Carolina. He stays deeply connected to the Southwest’s emerging bands—often through families that keep the scene alive. Outside music, he builds websites, reads business books, and participates in English Premier League Fantasy Football.
