Wild Oceans Make Waves at the Cavern

Walking past Central Station, lights glaring off the wet pavement, I turn left through an alcove, turn then right, and down the stairs into Exeter’s legendary basement bar music venue: The Cavern. This place is iconic, having hosted some of the most impressive musical acts in the world over its 35 years. I remember seeing bands like Muse start out here in the 90s, and I always loved the vibe. It’s a reconstruction of the Cavern, apparently where some Liverpool band used to play.

With a lineup like tonight’s, we’re lucky to have tickets. That said, the crowd has never felt hemmed in or oppressive at this venue and the atmosphere is always positive. You can see the whites of the performers’ eyes and get to the bar easily.  always feels intimate, like a private party. The selection of drinks is good, including plenty of non-alcoholic beers for drivers like me.  We are lucky to have venues like this, which support newer acts as well as more established ones, all without charging the kind of extortionate prices that are one reason people struggle to afford to get out and see music these days. But not tonight.

3 Days of Wonder

Two quality young bands kick off the proceedings tonight.  3 Days of Wonder have already proven they can deliver at many stages across the South West, and I first saw them play at HMV Live a few years back.  Their songwriting is strong with emphasis on hooks, for example, “Over and Out” and the singalong chorus of the finale “Maniacs”, plus they put a lot of thought into the sonic arrangement with subtle guitar lines. Talented new drummer Theo adds controlled energy to the group and even sings tasteful  backing vocals on a couple of songs to add colour.   Luke is a confident (but not cocky) frontman whose distinctive and well-rounded voice really cuts through.  They have a great summer ahead of them with gigs including Boardmasters and I expect to see them soar.

GRLBND

GRLBND are another recently formed young band who impressed everyone I spoke to at the gig. A great set, mainly originals, including “Crazy,” which is just plain clever and catchy!  They only have one song out on Spotify (“Amoristic Killer”, catchy as hell), so I’m looking forward to hearing them do a good job of recording these, as they were so good live. Casey’s drumming is solid and unflashy, serving the songs well; Lucie gives me guitar envy with her Fender Jaguar, played confidently in a range of subtle styles; bassist Imala thumps out the tunes with an understated style, really carrying the songs as all bass players should (bassist here!) and singer Emily has an impressive voice.  I like the way none of them hog the limelight – they just crack on with the business of making engaging high-energy music, which is why we are all here tonight.

Wild Oceans

Headliners Wild Oceans deliver a well-rounded set of songs. Think Foo Fighters but with the better bits of 80s indie rock mixed in.  Accessible and melodic, but sincere and never corny; heavy at times but always grabbing the audience’s hearts: a warm, friendly energy. They seem relaxed on stage, with lots of grinning among the band members – they are experienced musicians who have each played on huge stages before forming this band.

Opener and recent single “Bloodbath” is a rich slab of commercial rock that gets the audience pumping straightaway.  Drummer Rich grimaces like a loon and is obviously in his element – I’m just glad he’s at the back of the stage for the audience’s safety (insert drummer joke here).  He holds it all together tightly and never misses a beat.

Recent single “The Fear”, reviewed in this blog, is as powerful live as I had hoped, with its earnest singalong chorus.  The entire audience is compelled to step into this kind of song with the band and stay there, such is the brilliant combination of sincerity and melodic power.

Jon’s singing is incredible: he knows when to let rip with a keening melody with heartfelt lyrics, the combination of which is as emotionally charged and affecting as it is on their recordings: the perfect blend of words and musical notes shooting straight into the audience. When the band adjusts their dynamics to allow him to sing softly, the effect is mesmerising and provides a moment of calm. At least before the next punch in the ears.

The stage is evidently too small for a band like this, so Jon goes off-piste during the final song and ends the set in the middle of the crowd. A short but perfectly-formed set, no filler or gristle here, just flavoursome food for the heart and mind served up tastefully. I look forward to seeing them play outdoor festivals and hearing the roar of a larger crowd’s approval.

Big thanks to Stu Pearce and Joe Martin of no ordinary fish for the review and photos.

Written by singing bass guitarist Stu, the new single “The Only One” from Exeter band no ordinary fish is a love song dedicated to the person you have a special connection with, no matter what life brings. A heartfelt drum beat a meets guitar riff while a melody underlines the joy of their meeting. The relationship blossoms over 4 minutes into an exquisite thing, a blend of hope and gratitude with a tinge of poignancy.

Recorded live at Exeter Sound Gallery Studios, England, mixed and mastered by Duncan Chave. This is the sixth single from their upcoming third album and a departure from their recent sound, a rare ballad of exquisite depth.
