What’s the first word that comes to mind when we say…Library.

Well, this one is so much more than a place for books. Exeter Library prides itself on being a cultural and community hub in the city’s centre.

Situated centrally on New Buildings lane, just a plectrum’s throw away from the many lively Exeter music venues such as Exeter Phoenix, The Cavern, Corn Exchange and the Old Firehouse.

Exeter Library offers a surprising and eclectic array of music events, workshops, and activities for all ages.

Managed by the charity Libraries Unlimited, Exeter Library is Devon’s largest library.

It is dedicated to positively impacting the community through a shared love of reading, information, and a thriving and everchanging events calendar. With over 60,000 books, CDs, DVDs, and 1km of shelves, the library is ideal for knowledge seekers and music lovers alike.

Exeter Library regularly hosts music performances in various genres, including folk, Jazz, classical, and Children’s music.

They’ve run three of their popular event series, which brings local talent to the stage every three months.

December’s Battle of the Bands is an annual highlight, attracting diverse acts, while the library also welcomes performances by the Exeter Jazz Orchestra and unique events like the English Touring Opera for Children.

Regular events include ‘Sing Out!’ a fortnightly group for anybody who wants to come along and sing or listen (no experience required!), poetry and spoken word workshops and performances and the fantastic ‘Library Lates,’ offering evenings of live arts, craft, live music and a pop-up bar.

Exeter Library has proven to be an adaptable space for various performances, thanks to its flexibility and commitment to the arts. There really is something for everyone, from over 60’s discos to children’s concerts, all set against the backdrop of the library’s historic and welcoming atmosphere.

Exeter Library’s Rougemont Room, with a capacity of 80, was designed with acoustics in mind and is perfect for intimate concerts and gatherings.

For larger events, the main library area can hold up to 250 people, making it one of the city’s more adaptable performance spaces. With ambitions to expand its capacity further, Exeter Library is firmly planting its roots in the local music scene.

The library’s commitment to inclusivity is evident through its full wheelchair access throughout the building, ensuring that all visitors can enjoy the events.

The library is home to several other spaces contributing to its cultural and inclusive status.

FabLab is a creative space where you can design and make anything from 3D-printed objects to laser-cut dreamcatchers.
BIPC: The British Library’s Business and Intellectual Property Centre provides valuable resources and expert guidance for entrepreneurs.
Exeter Library’s meeting rooms are available for hire, making them ideal for conferences, workshops, and gatherings.
The Owl and the Pussycat Café: A cosy spot for coffee and homemade cake or a delicious lunch. Perfect for pre-event relaxation or a day after the night before brunch!

In the Spotlight for for Arts & Creative

This year, Exeter Library was recognised for its connection to Exeter’s Arts and Creative community. Regular collaborations with local artists and event sponsorships keep the library at the heart of the city’s creative pulse. The team won the Exeter Living Awards for the Arts and Creative CAtegory for its “inventive, vital role deep in the heart of city’s cultural fabric, with impressive half a million visitors in 2023, many engaging events, plus fostering of local talent.’’

What’s coming up?

The library’s event calendar is packed with exciting happenings.

‘Frau That’s what I call Music’ is coming to Exeter Library on October 22nd, presented by the English Touring Opera and featuring trailblazing female songwriters.

Later in the year, the much-anticipated Exeter Jazz Orchestra Christmas Show will take place, bringing festive music to life in the historic venue.

First gig was to see the Ordinary Boys at the Lemon Grove (Exeter) at 16 after taking a liking to their Ska-inspired track 'Rudy's in Love' (and the frontman, Preston). After University, she spent seven years in brilliant Bristol, revelling in its dynamic music scene—a move very much inspired by a first-time visit to St Paul's Carnival. She now lives in Exeter alongside her partner Bev, embracing Devon country life and swapping sound systems for sea swimming and scriptwriting.
