In the Spotlight with Kitty Crocker
Where are you from, and where are you currently based?
I’m from Cornwall, but I am currently based in Exeter. My sister lives here, so I am a frequent visitor!
What inspired you to become a musician?
Singing and playing music has always been my favourite thing to do, so it just seemed like a natural route for me. It’s what I spend my spare time doing, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
Who are your biggest musical influences, and why?
At the moment I absolutely love CMAT, Olivia Dean, Matilda Mann. I love female singer-songwriters as I feel I can really relate to their music, and they all write incredibly! My family and I have always loved the band Stereophonics, too. The lead singer, Kelly Jones, inspires me in every way possible!
How would you describe your music in your own words?
I think it’s honest. It’s definitely from the heart, and I try to release a range of songs that range from super upbeat to slower, more sombre ones. I like the fact that my music has a range to it.
Can you tell us about your latest release, “Want It Back”?
I wrote Want It Back in about half an hour, which is slightly different for me. I think it’s because it was inspired by what was happening around me and to me at the time. It was one of those songs that was incredibly cathartic and freeing to write, and I’m just so happy that other people love it and can relate to it as well.
What inspired you to write and produce this track?
I wanted the production on this track to be pretty simple and to give the words as much space as possible. It’s a very personal song, so I didn’t want to overcrowd the track with many different sounds and instruments. I’m so happy with how it turned out. I was able to make my vision come true!
How do you typically approach the songwriting and recording process?
For me, the songwriting process happens when it happens. I never try and force it. If it ever feels too much like a struggle, then I’ll drop it and return to it later. The recording process is quite different for every song, really! We start with an acoustic demo and then build it from there.
What’s been the biggest highlight of your music career so far?
Having Want It Back as BBC Introducing’s “Track of the Week” for the South West was an incredible moment. It’s been a dream, and I’m so grateful to Dan Pascoe and the BBC Intro team!
What do you enjoy most about performing live?
I love everything about it. It’s the best feeling in the world! I love seeing the audience’s response to different songs and seeing them respond positively to my music.
What’s the most challenging aspect of being a musician for you?
I’m quite self-critical and always want to strive to achieve more. I need to remind myself to reflect on all the incredible gigs and live sessions I’ve done and be grateful for it all!!

Quick Fire Encore!
The absolute essential item for you on tour?
Snacks! Always have snacks!
What’s your favourite place to perform in Exeter?
I haven’t played in Exeter yet, but I’m really looking forward to my upcoming gig at 12 Bar. I’d also love to play at Exeter Phoenix one day!
Do you have any pre-show rituals or ways to get ready?
Practising everything as much as I need to always makes for a more relaxed performance.
What’s the weirdest or funniest thing that’s happened onstage?
I played a festival earlier this year, and a guy was dancing along to one of my slower songs! It made me smile so much during the set—it was great fun.
What’s one Exeter-based business you’d like to shout out?
Helen of Troy on Fore Street! It’s the nicest shop I want to buy everything in there!
Describe your music style in three words.
Honest, observant, varied.
Finally, what's the best piece of advice you've received as an artist?
To not compare myself to others and to be proud of what I’m creating, even if that sounds a bit cliché!
