Exeter is about to burst into some serious activity this June and the indie music scene is taking centre stage. As part of the citywide June Boom celebrations, we’re turning up the volume on the artists, venues and grassroots energy that make Exeter’s live scene pretty electric!
Exeter really does offer something for everyone, so if you’re into rising rock bands, genre-experimental acts, or indie heroes, there’s definitely a night out in Exeter during June with your name on it.
We’ll be linking to features on our favourite independent venues throughout this series, from Exeter Phoenix and Exeter Cavern to the library and everything in between.
Here’s what’s happening during the weeks of June Boom.
Week One
12 Bar Running Club @ 12 Bar Music & Social (Sun 1st June + Sun 15th June)
Kick off your June with a unique blend of movement and music at the 12 Bar Running Club. Meeting at 10:00 AM, participants sync up to a specially curated playlist before venturing on a relaxed 5K run through Exeter. Post-run, gather back at 12 Bar for coffee, cake, and conversation. Open to all levels, just bring your running kit, headphones and a love for music!
C Duncan @ Exeter Phoenix (Thu, 5th June)
Mercury-nominated Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist C Duncan brings his genre-defying chamber pop to the Phoenix. With dreamy melodies and detailed arrangements, this is one for fans of thoughtful, cinematic songwriting.
American Four Tops @ Exeter Corn Exchange (Thu 5th June)
This soulful, high-energy tribute show brings the golden era of Motown to life. Expect all the hits, killer harmonies, plus, polished choreography that made the Four Tops icons.
Twin Atlantic + Kodi @ Exeter Phoenix (Thu 5th June)
Scottish alt-rock mainstays Twin Atlantic hit Exeter with support from rising indie trio Kodi. Anthemic, high-energy and made for fans of Kings of Leon and Catfish & The Bottlemen.
Butler Blake and Grant @ Exeter Phoenix (Sat 7th June)
Three legends, one stage. Bernard Butler, Norman Blake and James Grant unite for an intimate, harmony-laced performance rooted in five decades of songwriting history.
Chaton Laveur @ Exeter Cavern (Sat 7th June)
Minimalist kraut-pop meets French art rock. Chaton Laveur blends analogue grooves, soft vocals, and hypnotic rhythms to create a raw yet poetic experience.
Katey Brooks + Kevin McLoughlin @ Exeter Phoenix (Sun 8th June)
Soulful, award-winning and globally toured, Katey Brooks headlines with support from Florida’s captivating guitar storyteller Kevin McLoughlin.
Week Two
Custody + Wednesday Club @ Exeter Cavern (Mon 9th June)
Finnish emo with melodic roots meets Exeter’s own punk rock energy. A must for fans of Hot Water Music, Fiddlehead and Latterman.
Haytor, 3 Days of Wonder, The Kabins @ Exeter Cavern (Tue 10th June)
A triple-threat of local powerhouses: Haytor bring festival-ready indie rock, 3 Days of Wonder deliver socially charged anthems, and The Kabins channel Britpop swagger.
Tobias ben Jacob Trio @ Exeter Phoenix (Thu 12th June)
Known for his poetic folk-rock and powerful storytelling, Tobias returns with a new trio line-up and a preview of his upcoming solo album.
Holy Scum + Ian + Big Shipping @ Exeter Cavern (Fri 13th June)
A noise-rock collision from Manchester to Exeter. Holy Scum bring sludge, synths and chaos; Ian and Big Shipping add layers of local DIY brilliance.
Snake Eyes + Guests @ Exeter Cavern (Sat 14th June)
Brighton’s grit-pop trio blur 90s grunge with sharp indie hooks. Think noise, nostalgia and a stage presence that hits hard.
Clearwater Creedence Revival + John Verity @ Exeter Phoenix (Sat 14th June)
Classic rock done right. Creedence hits from “Proud Mary” to “Bad Moon Rising”, with blues-rock support from former Argent guitarist John Verity.
Burning Rope @ Exeter Phoenix (Sun 15th June)
Formed from the ashes of Catfish, Burning Rope honours blues rock tradition with soaring guitar work and heartfelt original songs.
Week Three
Dewey Decibels @ Exeter Library (Wed 18th June)
Back for another genre-defying night in the stacks, Dewey Decibels brings together eclectic sounds from three standout acts, including:
Technicolour Steam Train are a nine-piece ska-fusion band with brass, soul-funk grooves and high-octane stage presence.
Japan, Man: dreamy, alt-pop meets funk-infused indie, fronted by Laeticia Acra from Beirut.
Sid Plus One an original indie rock blending sensual melodies with funky jams.
Co-produced by Obvious Events, it’s a bold reminder that our library can be anything but quiet.
Electric Eel Shock @ Exeter Cavern (Sat 21st June)
Japanese garage rock legends Electric Eel Shock return with their wild, theatrical energy and heavy metal edge. Expect big riffs, big humour and even bigger stage antics!
Mark Travis (Eagles Acoustic) @ Exeter Phoenix (Sat 21st June)
Stripped-back, intimate and heartfelt, Mark Travis brings his originals and acoustic tributes to the timeless sound of The Eagles. A must-see for fans of 70s folk-rock.
Filth @ Exeter Cavern (Sun 22nd June)
Downtempo deathcore meets hip-hop influence in this thunderous performance from North Carolina’s FILTH. Not for the faint of heart – this one’s heavy in every sense.
Week Four
Crywank @ Exeter Cavern (Mon 23rd June)
Lo-fi anti-folk from Manchester with cult favourite status. Crywank delivers confessional lyrics and self-aware sadness with punk spirit.
Kae Tempest + Piglet @ Exeter Phoenix (Wed 25th June)
Poet, rapper, playwright and Mercury Prize nominee Kae Tempest brings their acclaimed words and performance to Exeter. Expect brilliance. Support from Irish artist Piglet, combining tender storytelling with sharp production.
Mac Adams @ 12Bar (Fri 27th June)
This summer, Mac Adams sets out on his headline tour in celebration of his second single Never Know. Playing at 12Bar this June Boom, Mac will blend indie-pop with soulful textures of jazz and R&B, Mac brings a sound that’s as vibrant as it is vulnerable. His music invites you in and asks you to feel deeply.
Southern Fried Groove Queens @ Exeter Phoenix (Sat 28th June)
Blues duo Lee Hall & Lucy Piper bring deep Southern soul to Devon with their fiery, feel-good boogie and irresistible groove.
The Rock Project Open Jam @ BOMBA (Sun 29th June)
Celebrate Exeter’s rising stars at this all-ages open jam hosted by The Rock Project. Expect big energy and fresh talent on stage at BOMBA.
